HR To Do List: May

April 25, 2023

May has historically been a slower month for HR, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. In fact, slower months present an excellent opportunity to focus on your company’s culture, plan exciting office events, and prepare for the summer ahead, whether it’s your busiest season or your slowest.

Here are some HR to-do’s to get ready for summer:

  • If you need temporary or part-time staff for the summer months, start posting job openings now. Consider the avenues that worked best for you in the past, like high schools, community colleges, universities, job posting sites, or local Chamber of Commerce. Ensure you hire top-notch employees for the job.
  • Coordinate vacation schedules with employees. The summer months are the peak vacation times, so request that employees submit their vacation requests as early as possible to ensure adequate coverage for your company. Know how many people you need at work each day and don’t approve too many vacation requests.
  • Perform an HR audit to make sure you’re in compliance. Check that all your employee files are complete, payroll records are maintained, and employee terminations are correctly matched with medical carrier’s invoices.

Calendar items:

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month as well as Jewish American Heritage Month.

Consider acknowledging these events through a Diversity Committee, lunch and learn sessions, or a visit to a local museum to learn more about these cultures.

The Kentucky Derby will be held on May 6th.

Consider throwing an office Derby party where employees can design and compete for the wackiest, most beautiful, or best REAL Derby hat.

Cinco de Mayo is on May 5th.

Consider throwing a party and educating employees about the true meaning of Cinco de Mayo, which is a celebration of the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Mother’s Day is on May 14th this year.

Honor working moms who balance their lives between work and family and show them how much you appreciate them.

The 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 will take place on May 28th.

Consider organizing an event to teach employees about the legends of Indy Car racing, its differences from NASCAR, and the traditions surrounding the Indianapolis 500.

May may be a slow month for the technicalities of HR, but there are plenty of opportunities to build your company’s culture.
